Infecting The City

I think that the idea of the whole 'Infecting the City' was very good and that the causes they were trying to make people aware of were very important but i found that the exhibition did not really grab my attention. I wasn't blown away with realization. I do think that the location at the train station was a brilliant idea.

As a Designer, Why Is It Important To Be Aware Of The Gestalt Principles

I think it is important to be aware of the Gestalt principles because being aware helps us to realize how people's eyes and minds perceive items and what our minds find aesthetically pleasing. As a designer it is incredibly important to be able to create and item that is aesthetically pleasing and easy to look at in order to sell the products you design. We live in a world in which everything needs to look good. I do think that out brains sub-consciously pick up on the Gestalt principles whether we choose to be aware of them or not.

Symmetry

The tattoo on this woman's back is symmetrical. If we drew a line down the middle of the design, both halves would be identical. Symmetry is incredibly aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

This Circlet is perfectly symmetrical. If you were to fold it exactly in half,  both halves would match up perfectly. both halves are identical

Closure

An example of Closure as our eye finishes off the image where ink has been omitted. We see the image as two figures embracing as opposed to only seeing the black figure.

In this image closure is evident because even though the watch isn't a full closed circle, the perceives it as one

Continuity

Our eyes follow the flow of the lines in the wallpaper around the door, frame etc. A bit of an optical illusion.

Our eyes follow the flow and spiraling of the metal in this pendant by Georg Jensen.

Proximity

Proximity is expressed here, because the closeness of the dots on the page vary, the very close small dots around the sphere make us see the sphere as a sphere. they give the image a shape. (waffling a bit ^_^ )

The Proximity of the dots to each other on this pendant forces the eye to see it as a group of three dots and a group of five dots instead of an array of random dots.

Figure & Ground

An example of figure and ground as the white appears to be the foreground of the image because it is lighter and the figure stands back because of its dark colour. The darker posters behind the figure mesh it into the background as well. The figure can also seem like it is in front of the white 'screen'.

This necklace displays a perfect example of figure and ground because the figure and ground relationships change as the eye perceives the brown bird and then the white bird. Both seem to be the background and foreground.

Similarity

In this image, Similarity is evident by the way the colours and textures of the chairs group them as an interconnected 'whole'

I believe this jewellery collection is an example of Similarity purely because it is a set. Each separate piece has been made with the same style, colours, stones and they look like they belong together.

Gestalt: Definition

"Gestalt is a psychology term which means "unified whole". It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied."-Quoted from here
